AUTOPSY REPORT #SC-006
SUBJECT: Six of Cups (Rider-Waite-Smith), recovered from active spread
EXAMINER: The Coroner
DATE OF EXAMINATION: Immediate. The body was still warm. It usually is.

PRELIMINARY FINDINGS

The subject presents as a card of apparent harmlessness: two children, a courtyard, a cup passed hand to hand, a white flower in the taller child’s grip. Examined superficially, the scene reads as sentimental. This is the first lie. The white flower is not a gift. It is a distraction held in the dominant hand while the other commits the theft.

Note the architecture. The courtyard is walled. There is a building behind them, and the building is where the adults live — the present, the obligation, the unpaid invoice. The children stand with their backs to it. Every figure in this card faces away from the structure that sustains them. This is not whimsy. This is flight.

Note the cups. Five arranged on a low bench, one passed between hands. Six vessels, and not one of them is being drunk from. The contents are untested. Nostalgia, in my experience, is always served in a vessel no one has actually tasted. The memory is not the wine. The memory is the cup, and the cup is empty, and that is precisely why it can be filled with anything you like.

CAUSE OF DEATH

The subject does not kill by force. It kills by displacement. The mechanism is as follows: the past is presented as a livable address. The victim is escorted — gently, by the hand, child to child — out of the present tense and into a courtyard that no longer exists. There is no struggle. That is the elegance of the method. The victim thanks the killer for the tour.

Cause of death, in a word: retrieval. The victim is killed by reaching for something already gone. The reach is the wound. The gone is the blade.

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS

Factor one: the walled garden. The courtyard is enclosed, which the sentimental read as intimacy. Forensically, enclosure is containment. The subject does not offer the past as a place to visit. It offers it as a place to be kept. Every nostalgia is a small imprisonment with nice landscaping.

Factor two: the absence of a seventh cup. Six cups, and the seventh — the one that would be the future, the next, the forward motion — is missing from the scene entirely. Not broken. Not spilled. Simply not present. The subject has arranged the evidence to exclude tomorrow, and the exclusion is the confession.

Factor three: the child as courier. Children are used here for the same reason they are used in every confidence scheme: they are not suspected. A man offering you a cup of your own past is a threat. A child offering it is a gift. The subject weaponizes the face of innocence. It is the oldest trick in the deck and it works every time, because the victim supplies the child themselves — their own, or the one they used to be.

SECONDARY FINDINGS — THE SPREAD AS CRIME SCENE

The surrounding cards testify. If the Six of Cups appears beside the Eight of Cups, the subject is already in motion, abandoning the very thing it mourns — consistent with a burglar fleeing. Beside the Devil, the nostalgia has become a chain with a pleasant face. Beside the Fool, the victim is being pushed toward a cliff while being told it is a playground. The Six of Cups never works alone. It is not a solitary crime. It is the hand on the shoulder while the other hand works the pocket.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

The subject is a burglar. Not a guest. A guest arrives, is fed, and leaves. A burglar arrives, is fed, and takes. The Six of Cups takes the present, which is the only thing anyone actually owns, and leaves in its place a receipt for a purchase that was never made.

The victim will describe the encounter as warm. The victim will say they felt seen. The victim will not notice the courtyard walls until the gate has closed, and by then the children have already gone back inside, and the cups are on the bench, and the flower is wilting, and the building behind them is still waiting with the lights on and the door ajar and no one coming home.

Nostalgia does not visit. It cases the joint, waits for you to feel safe, and leaves with everything that was still yours.

The Six of Cups is not a memory. It is a theft in progress, and you are the thing being taken.
